The Wilbarger Brushing Protocol is a technique developed by Patricia Wilbarger, MEd, OTR, FAOTA, and was designed as a tool to assist individuals who are very sensitive to sensory stimulation. This specific protocol has been shown to decrease sensitivity to sensory stimuli, if done under the supervision of an Occupational Therapist. This brush by Wilbarger is latex free with the easy to hold ergomatic handle that helps to provide maximum results.  Brushing provides deep pressure or “proprioception” which helps to increase alertness, calm, and focus.  These firm but gentle flexible plastic brushes will help you achieve encouraging results with your child’s sensory development. This technique can be used at home, but it always suggested to be taught first by an Wilbarger-trained Occupational Therapist. If this has not been prescribed by your therapist, ask your therapist if you think this technique might benefit your child, and request training, as adverse effects have been found if done by someone who is not trained in the proper protocol.
